Door Jamb Armor is basically a set of protective steel sleeves that wrap around your doorjamb and door. By wrapping the key stress points on the door with steel, we can give a standard, residential entry door structural characteristics similar to those of a steel framed door, at a fraction of the cost.
Why is wrapping necessary? When a door is kicked, two types of force are exerted on the jamb:
- Direct force: the straight-ahead force that will tend to push the deadbolt through the back of the jamb.
- Torque: When a door is kicked, it will twist, depending on where it is kicked.
Why strike plates don't work.
- First, to be effective, these plates must be very thick. Because of this thickness, strike plates must either be installed behind the doorjamb, which makes installation difficult, or the front side of the doorjamb, which means that the jamb must be carved out in order for the door to close.
- These plates are only laying against one side of the jamb, which is why they cannot prevent the jamb from twisting when the door is kicked. This causes the jamb to split.
- Jamb Wrapping basically creates a cast for your doorjamb.
- Covering the front and backsides of the doorjamb means that the components need only be half the thickness to produce the same strength.
- By sandwiching the doorjamb on both edges, we insure that the jamb will not move anywhere that the Jamb Shield does not.
- By covering the back edge of the doorjamb, the wood has nowhere to go even if it were to split.
Why is the Jamb Shield so Long?
- The longer length of the Jamb Shield helps absorb the twisting of the door when kicked.
- This longer length spreads the direct force along the length of the stud, instead of allowing it to concentrate in one area.
We applied this same concept to the development of the hinge shield piece. While these pieces are not as long as the jamb shield, they help prevent the jamb from splitting when the hinge side of the door is kicked.
By wrapping the doorjamb, Door Jamb Armor essentially becomes a part of your door from the time you install it.
